Hatteras fills the fiber gap
CEO Kevin Sheehan sees bright Ethernet over Copper future
by Sean Buckley
While it's clear that Ethernet services tended to appear where there was available fiber, there's an ever-growing realization amongst service providers that the same copper line can be leveraged to deliver Ethernet services to a broader customer base outside the reach of a fiber. Telecommunications Executive Editor Sean Buckley speaks with Kevin Sheehan, President and CEO of Hatteras Networks about ongoing developments in Ethernet over Copper.
In the following Audiocast, Kevin Sheehan answers these questions:
• While Ethernet services have typically followed the path where there is
available fiber, the reality is only a certain amount of buildings in the US
actually have access to fiber, leaving out an entire market of smaller
buildings and businesses without Ethernet service, so we’re seeing a
growing movement to address that shortfall with Ethernet over copper.
Do you believe that Ethernet over copper can help address the desire for
Ethernet where fiber is scarce and expand its overall availability?
• Do you believe there’s a sweet spot in terms of bandwidth that EoC can
address under 10 Mbps, which has been the typical entry point for
Ethernet over Fiber?
• In addition to delivering traditional business services, other customers
such as MTS Allstream, are using EoC to deliver not only service, but
also for wireless backhaul. Are more carriers looking at EoC for that
purpose?
