NewsGlobe: Interviews
Sycamore soups up the optical control plane
Large carriers continue to take notice
by Sean Buckley
In this exclusive Audiocast interview, Executive Editor Sean Buckley spoke with Kevin Oye, vice president of systems and technology at Sycamore Networks about new developments in the optical control plane.
In this Audiocast, Kevin Oye answers the following questions:
• The unified optical control plane has touted a lot of benefits of
automated provisioning, multi-vendor network restoration and the ability
to handle various traffic types, including Ethernet. With OIF and its
member vendors and service providers making progress, what is helping
to take the idea of the optical control plane out of the lab an into the
live network?
• Sycamore has been involved with the optical control plane itself for a
number of years. What is your approach to it and how is that approach
resonating with carriers?
• Sycamore along with other prominent vendors and service providers
participated in the OIF’s recent demonstration of optical control planes
for on-demand Ethernet services. Do you feel like that event
accomplished what it set out to do and are there any lessons learned
you can share from that experience?
• While it is clear service providers want an optical control plane to help
provision existing SONET/DWDM services, what effect will it have on the
provisioning of Ethernet services?
