BT’s Landmark Training & Education Endeavor

Are shaping of the way agenda-setting service provider BT plans its 21st Century Network (21CN) wouldn’t be possible without a radical restructuring in staffing, training and education, a successful effort that has taken place behind the scenes.
“We decided about 18 months ago that we needed a fairly radical transformation of the IT function inside BT, so that the reshaped organization could realize huge cost savings through global sourcing and software development,” recalls David Butcher, director of resource management for networked IT services at BT.
Under the bold initiative, the service provider took half the IT staff it had working on internal BT projects and moved them to customer contracts. But what of the work left behind? It was outsourced to offshore providers with a cost and manpower savings.
