Gaining about 839,000 customers in the first quarter of 2013, Tracfone had about 23.2 million mobile customers in total in the US at the end of March.

Tracfone’s acquisition of Start Wireless follows its purchase of another MVNO called Simple Mobile in mid-2012.

America Movil (Mexico City, Mexico) expects the deal for Start Wireless to close in the second quarter of 2013 but notes that it is subject to the receipt of various regulatory approvals.

Owned by Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim, America Movil had 262.9 million mobile subscribers across the Americas, plus another 65.3 million fixed-line customers, at the end of March 2013.
