Alstom Grid and Capgemini form smart-grid partnership

France’s Alstom Grid and Capgemini say they have formed a partnership to pursue joint commercial opportunities for their combined smart grid solutions.

The companies – both of which offer consulting and outsourcing services – are launching what they claim is the industry’s first real-time, cloud-based integrated distribution management systems (IDMS), as well as a new cloud-based Demand Response Management System (DRMS).

The services are intended to provide cost-savings and increased reliability to utility customers looking to reduce operational, maintenance and capital expenditure while improving customer service.

Alstom (Levallois-Perret, France) and Capgemini (Paris, France) say the other benefits will include lower risk, through a progressive rollout of mission-critical technologies, as well as optimized IT maintenance and system management.

“We want distribution utilities and their customers to benefit from our advanced smart-grid applications in an easier and more cost-effective way,” said Karim El Naggar, the vice president of network management systems from Alstom Grid.

According to Perry Stoneman, Alstom’s corporate vice president, the combination of Capgemini’s experience in the utilities industry with Alstom’s managed business services framework will allow utilities to take advantage of the latest in distribution management applications while minimizing capital investments.

Alstom Grid claims to be among the top three companies in the electrical transmission sector, with annual sales turnover of more than €4 billion, while Capgemini reported global revenues of €9.7 billion in 2011.
