Accenture joins Weightless board of directors

UK-based Weightless says consulting and technology services group Accenture has joined its board of directors.

UK-based Weightless says consulting and technology services group Accenture has joined its board of directors.

Accenture’s (Dublin, Republic of Ireland) membership should boost efforts by Weightless (Cambridge, UK) to popularize its M2M communications standard based on the use of white-space spectrum – gaps in frequency bands freed up by the transition from analog to digital broadcasting systems.

“Accenture’s deep industry knowledge and technology capabilities, unmatched depth and breadth of services, their reputation and global reach make them the perfect complement to the existing board, and will bring world class strategic experience to the SIG as we continue to roll out our proposition,” said William Webb, the chief executive of Weightless.

The so-called special interest group already counts a number of high-profile organizations among its members, including Vodafone-controlled Cable & Wireless Worldwide (London, UK) and chip designer ARM (Cambridge, UK).

Earlier this year, Weightless ratified version 1.0 of its standard, arguing the technology will allow devices to communicate over a distance of 10km, a battery to last for as long as ten years and chipsets to be produced for as little as $2 per unit.

It also recently claimed to have signed up its thousandth member in the shape of components developer NextG-Com (Staines upon Thames, London).

Aidan Quilligan, managing director of global mobility delivery for Accenture Mobility, is to sit on the Weightless board and described the Weightless standard as a “truly enabling technology for M2M”.

“We look forward to working with the board and other Weightless members to explore all the opportunities in this exciting space, and really help the vision of a ‘connected’ world become a reality,” he said.
