TeliaSonera joins Orange-Deutsche Telekom M2M alliance

TeliaSonera (Stockholm, Sweden), a mobile network operator, has signed an M2M agreement with France Telecom-Orange (Paris, France) and Deutsche Telekom (Bonn, Germany). The agreement, which initially was signed by France Telecom-Orange and Deutsche Telekom in February 2011 to cover France, Germany, Belgium, and Luxembourg, has since then added the Netherlands (Deutsche Telekom) and most recently the UK. The M2M service will now extend to cover TeliaSonera’s geographical reach, including Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Estonia and Lithuania.

Report: utility security a concern among U.S. smart grid

IDC Energy Insights (Framingham, Mass., U.S.A.), a market research firm, announced on Tuesday a new report analysis of the security initiatives among North American utility companies. According to the report, of the 150 U.S. utility companies surveyed, 75% deemed security investments to be of the highest importance, while 38% depicted security to be one of the top IT initiatives this year.

Western Australia puts $36.5 million into telehealth

The Western Australia government last week announced it will spend $36.5 million on telehealth services in six country hospitals located in inland Western Australia.

The initiative, funded under the Liberal-National Government’s Royalties for Regions Program, is the centerpiece of the State Government’s spending on health in the 2011-2012 State Budget and aims to reform and improve access to healthcare, according to a government statement.

BVS releases portable M2M 3G cell tower testing

Berkeley Varitronics Systems, Inc. (BVS) (Metuchen, N.J., U.S.A), a provider of security products for the telecommunications industry, released the Squid M2M 3G Cell Tower Tester.

The Squid 3G Cell Tower Tester is a handheld receiver that provides installers and electrical engineers a real time display of local 3G carriers’ base stations and their respective signal strength or Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI).

ATIS Cloud Services Forum releases CDN Interconnection Specifications

ATIS (Washington, D.C.), a membership organization for telecom industry standards, announced on Tuesday that its Cloud Services Forum (CSF) has released the “CDN Interconnection Use Case Specification and High Level Requirements” standards document. The standard provides an initial description of content distribution networks (CDNs) and develops interconnection use cases and high-level requirements to support passing content distribution requests between two service providers.

AT&T, Space Systems object to TerreStar sale to Dish

Bankrupt telecommunications firm TerreStar Networks Inc (Reston, Va.) is facing two objections to its proposed sale to Dish Network Corp (Meridian, Colo.), including one from the maker of its own geosynchronous satellite.

Space Systems/Loral Inc (Palo Alto, Calif), manufacturer of the TerreStar satellite currently orbiting the earth, filed court papers Tuesday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court saying the plan would pay it only a fraction of what is owed under three satellite contracts.

Huawei increases smartphone shipment target to 20 million

Huawei Technologies Co Ltd (Shenzhen, P.R.C), a manufacturer of handsets and network equiptment, aims to ship 20 million smartphones this year, an executive said on Wednesday.

In April, Huawei said it expected to ship between 12 million and 15 million smartphones, which run on Google's Android operating system. Last year, it shipped 3.3 million units.

LightSquared secures $265 million in additional financing

LightSquared (Reston, Va.), a wholesale-only integrated 4G-LTE wireless broadband and satellite network, announced on Tuesday that it has raised $265 million in additional financing. The capital was drawn from both existing investors as well as new investors in the company.
According to LightSquared, the additional financing will be used for general corporate purposes, which includes constructing its 4G-LTE wholesale network. Over the last 12 months LightSquared has raised over $2.3 billion.

Philip Falcone’s Harbinger Capital has already put $3.1 billion into the company.
