SUPERCOMM news round-up

MRV plans new provisioning management platform; ADVA introduced FSP Service Manager

SUPERCOMM 2009 has come to a close. It was a busy three days – the TIA released a new report on energy and environmental trends, MRV Communications announced a new provisioning and network management platform, ADVA Optical Networking introduced their new FSP Service Manager and ADTRAN announced the industry's first sealed DSLAM with an integrated bonded copper uplink. Here is a round up of the exhibitor news that was released during the show.

Backhaul

  • ADTRAN, Inc., a supplier of next-generation broadband solutions, announced the industry's first sealed DSLAM with an integrated bonded copper uplink. The Total Access 1148A-DMT integrates both bonded copper and fiber uplinks into a sealed DSLAM design, enabling service providers to rapidly and cost-effectively accelerate the deployment of enhanced broadband services by leveraging the existing copper infrastructure—while providing a seamless migration path to a Fiber to the Node (FTTN) architecture.

Green IT

  • As the information and communications technology (ICT) industry adapts to an increasingly environmentally conscious and energy-stretched world, the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) has released a new report to educate and inform decision makers in need of reliable, relevant information that will help them sort out fact from fiction and carve out a viable business niche: ICT Green Report: Energy & Environmental Trends & Forecasts. The comprehensive reference guide organizes the concepts of climate change, carbon footprint, smart technologies and green business opportunities for the ICT industry. Throughout the publication, the report highlights ways that technology companies can enter new markets by focusing on the development of their green products and services.

Processing/Signaling

  • Telecommunications signaling equipment provider Adax launched the PacketAMC (PktAMC). Utilizing the embedded services of the Cavium family of multi-core processors, the PktAMC handles front-end processing of basic layer two switching as well as hardware acceleration for intelligent networking, control plane, security, QoS and wireless applications. This allows highly available, high performance carrier grade transport from the edge to core networks to be delivered over the PktAMC’s four 1Gigabit Ethernet connections.

Monitoring

  • Net Optics, Inc., provider of intelligent network monitoring access products announced the Net Optics Xstream line of products for high-performance telecom and data center networks. The new Net Optics Director Xstream and iLink Agg Xstream enable more cost-effective monitoring of the increasing volume of traffic on 10G network links. This enables customers to maintain the performance and security of applications and services while reducing Capex costs and improving operational efficiency.
  • VSS Monitoring Inc. unveiled vStack+, a connectivity technology for Distributed Traffic Capture Systems that brings high scalability, ultra low latency and fault tolerance to network monitoring. Distributed traffic capture comprises intelligent traffic capture devised that collect a copy of network traffic at any point and send it in real time to monitoring tools.

Networking

  • Optelian, a designer and manufacturer of optical transport systems, announced that Georgia Public Web has deployed a 40-channel, long-haul, multi-node, inter-state DWDM network utilizing Optelian’s LightGAIN optical transport system. Georgia Public Web (GPW), a non-profit facilities-based company providing internet access and other telecommunications services to communities, carriers, and customers throughout Georgia, had requirements to upgrade a large multi-node CWDM network to a higher capacity DWDM network.
  • MRV Communications, Inc. announced Pro-Vision, a provisioning and network management software platform for simplified deployment and proactive management of carrier Ethernet network devices. MRV also announced the OptiSwitch 904-MBH (OS904-MBH), a compact carrier Ethernet demarcation device with support for IEEE 1588v2 and synchronous Ethernet, providing the first wireless demarcation device with the two most popular timing mechanisms for 3G and 4G networks. MRV is a networking company with a full line of packet-optical transport (POTS), carrier Ethernet, 40G networking and out-of-band networking products.
  • Nortel introduced their new Border Control Media Gateway 1000 (BCMG 1000), an IP-to-IP session aware media gateway that leverages Nortel’s IPR and patents to increase service provider competitive advantage by improving voice quality and security. The Transit and Multimedia Interconnect solution equips service providers with advanced IP media inter-working, encryption and IP voice enhancements, which improve the subscriber experience and allow users to communicate with anyone over IP, regardless of the other user’s device or media type.
  • IntelliNet Technologies and Adax announced a partnership to deliver 3G and IP core network connectivity to telecom equipment vendors. The partnership means that IntelliNet technologies will be using the AdaxPacketRunner (APR), an intelligent ATCA Carrier Blade specifically designed to meet the I/O requirements of today’s telecom networks, within its ACTA architecture.
  • ADVA Optical Networking is adding speed and simplicity to the operation of optical transport networks with the introduction of the new FSP Service Manager. Designed for seamless integration with ADVA Optical Networking’s FSP Network Manager, the FSP Service Manager provides network operators with a comprehensive solution for the end-to-end delivery of high-quality services across networks built upon ADVA Optical Networking’s trusted FSP product family.

VOIP

  • Nortel Carrier VoIP and Application Solutions (CVAS) announced that it has enhanced its Communication Server (CS) 1500 regional Class 5 product by integrating with GENBAND’S G2 Compact Gateway. The integrated solution helps regional carriers using several widely deployed, but no longer supported, third party legacy switches to consolidate their Class 5 offices through seamless migration to VoIP.
  • Coalfields Telephone has selected Nortel Carrier VoIP and Application Solutions (CVAS) regional class 5 product to provide advanced carrier-grade voice and multimedia services to residential and business subscribers across Eastern Kentucky.

Awards

  • Hatteras Networks, multi-service Ethernet product provider for enterprise access services and next-generation mobile backhaul, has won the 2009 SUPERCOMM Eos Award for Technology Innovation in Access Networking with its new HN6100 multi-service platform for Ethernet business services and mobile backhaul. The Eos Awards were presented at a ceremony at the SUPERCOMM show on October 21. The HN6100 is the industry’s first modular, multi-service platform designed to enable rollout of any carrier Ethernet service, over any media, via any port or slot, from one compact, 2 RU, ultra-dense chassis.
  • Juniper Networks was selected as a winner in multiple categories in this year’s SUPERCOMM Eos Awards. In addition to three product wins, the company was honored with the Spotlight Award, an achievement recognizing the “best of” this year’s SUPERCOMM Eos Award winners.
  • NEC Corporation of America, a provider of network and IT solutions, announced Verizon as the winner of the ‘Empowered by Telecommunications’ award in the category of Technical Achievement. Verizon received the Technical Achievement recognition for its September 2008 optical control plane technology field trial. In this trial, Verizon performed the industry’s first multi-supplier control plane test, demonstrating near real-time circuit provisioning across the company’s commercial network.
