Clearwire plans 4G launches in several cities; Global Capacity launches online automated tariff pricing service
by Samantha Bookman
Glimmers of confidence began showing through in the financial markets this week as telecoms posted higher gains than they had in the first part of 2009. Meanwhile, 4G infrastructure is gaining a toehold in the United States, with more deployments announced in major cities. A rundown of some of this week's telecommunications happenings:
Business
UK-based Global Crossing, a global IP solutions provider, has extended its contract with the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) of England and Wales by three years to 2015, a deal worth £12 million (US$19.6 million). Global Crossing will implement its Hosted IP Telephony (HIPT) service at CPS three years earlier than originally planned.
Ventriloquist Voice Solutions will manage the alternate customer care communication channels at Reader’s Digest Canada, including phone messaging and email communications. The provider was selected by Reader’s Digest Canada following a competitive RFP process.
Nissan North America signed a multiyear agreement to outsource its IT requirements to Verizon Business, which will manage and secure Nissan North America’s converged voice and data network that links its North American headquarters with key business units, including production, design, R&D, manufacturing and distribution, to 13,000+ employees across 46 locations.
Sequans Communications, WiMAX chipmaker, announced this week that its chips are being used by Alvarion for its recently released BreezeMAX Extreme Mobile WiMAX 802.16e product line. Clearwire plans to launch 4G mobile Internet services late this year in several cities. In November, services will launch in Charlotte, Greensboro and Raleigh, N.C.; Austin, Dallas/Fort Worth, and San Antonio, Texas. In early December, Honolulu and Maui, Hawaii will receive 4G service with additional cities in the fourth quarter of 2009. Both Clearwire and Sprint will offer 4G in these cities under their own 4G brand. Consumers and businesses should expect to see additional network expansions throughout these cities, and a wide-range of independent marketing and advertising initiatives.
Broadband supplier ARRIS on Thursday announced that the ARRIS EGT VIPr2200 encoder can now compress four High Definition channels into one QAM channel, increasing bandwidth efficiency without sacrificing video quality. Unlike ASIC-based products, VIPr is a fully programmable platform allowing performance improvements like 4:1 HD through simple software upgrades without the need for hardware changes. This means less downtime for upgrades and longer product life cycles.
Telecom logistics company Global Capacity Inc. this week launched GCPrice, an online automated tariff pricing information service. GCPrice provides customers with automated access to Global Capacity’s extensive database of global telecom location, supply and pricing data, delivering the capability to generate accurate and up-to-date prices based on telecommunications tariffs for Leased Line and Ethernet services. The database contains over 5,000 discrete tariffs from 75 carriers in 67 countries. The database also contains over 10 million points of geographic and telecommunications location data. Pricing information is obtained through an online environment, enabling users to quickly and consistently develop quotations, store results and create reports from a single, centralized source.
