U.S. government panel to look at Verizon spectrum deals

A U.S. Senate antitrust panel is planning a hearing to discuss Verizon Wireless's multibillion dollar deals to buy wireless airwaves from cable operators and let them resell its mobile service, a spokeswoman said on Wednesday.

The U.S. Justice Department's antitrust division is also looking at the two deals, which critics oppose because they would mean that companies that are rivals in some businesses, like cable and Internet, would become allies in the wireless business.

India court orders licenses cancelled in telecom scandal

India's Supreme Court ordered on Thursday telecoms licenses issued under a scandal-tainted 2008 sale be revoked, striking a decisive blow against corruption that plagues the country and roiling the world's second biggest cellular market. The ruling applies to 122 licenses held by eight operators but potentially affects fewer than 5% of users in a fiercely competitive market crowded with more than a dozen players.
