SQA holds key to IMS
Service quality assurance (SQA) is the IMS trump card that telcos hold over ‘internet-centric’ services
by Paolo Trevisan
IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), the cornerstone of fixed-mobile convergence, should allow operators to deploy more services, more quickly and more cost effectively. Customers — if IMS delivers on its promise — will be able to access more personalised services and be able to combine applications in ways that best suit their needs.
However, with IMS spanning multiple access technologies, devices and layers (network, service, application) the delivery of the service is far from a trivial matter. It requires complex signalling interactions that involve application and session layer protocols over multiple architectures, service providers and network domains.
With service quality assurance at the heart of the success of IMS, the testing, monitoring and analysis of signalling and media interactions between application servers, end-points and gateways will be essential if interoperability is to be ensured and consumer demands satisfied.
