Is IMS The Only Path To FMC?
Wide range of benefits and value-added features increases interest.
by Olga Yashkova
The idea of combining wireline and wireless technologies in a single network caught the telecom industry’s attention quickly. FMC (fixed-mobile convergence) promises to eliminate some of the physical barriers currently preventing providers from reaching all their prospective customers with different services.
With FMC, wireline providers will no longer be bound to using only landline networks, while wireless network operators are expected to be able to use all the network resources available to meet growing demand from their subscribers.
IMS (IP multimedia subsystem) is almost always associated with FMC, however, there is some doubt about whether it is indeed the only path to FMC.
Currently, there are two prevailing core network technologies in the market: UMA (unified mobile access) and IMS. UMA has been created strictly for wireless vendors as one of the approaches toward FMC. It was developed to provide access to GPRS and GSM mobile services.
