Mobile WiMAX + 700-MHz Spectrum + Cable: Perfect Together
Convergence of Available Technology and Wireless Bandwidth Could Cause a Tectonic Shift in Telecom
by Jim Barthold
In 2008 the FCC will auction new, potent wireless spectrum in the 700- MHz space that it’s taking away from broadcasters moving from analog to digital.
Through an intriguing coincidence, mobile WiMAX — the lifeblood of fixed broadband wireless technology — will mature.
It’s not unreasonable to believe that the highest bidder would at least look closely at mobile WiMAX, also known as IEEE 802.16e, to offer a new form of broadband mobility. Even further, it’s not unreasonable to believe the cable industry will lead the bidding.
A Lucky Break
Serendipity usually is not associated with technological sea change. Still, the availability of a new swath of powerful wireless spectrum — from 698 MHz to 806 MHz, the so-called 700-MHz band — being wrested from broadcasters moving to all-digital offerings and the maturation of mobile WiMAX specifications could create a whole new mobile playing field before the decade’s end.
